Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act, or Obama Care health care, is a health insurance reform signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010. The ACA aims to allow more Americans to obtain access to affordable health care. The law does this by requiring all Americans to have health insurance, and by providing subsidies to help people pay for their premiums.

Not only that, but the law requires insurers to provide coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, and it limits how much they can charge for deductibles and copays. The law also expands Medicaid, so that more low-income Americans can have access to health care. Finally, the law creates state-based exchanges, where people can compare and purchase health insurance affordable care act plans.

The Obama Care health care has helped millions of people become insured when they would not have had insurance otherwise. This has also made getting coverage easier for people with pre-existing conditions. The ACA has successfully reduced the number of uninsured Americans and brought down the cost of healthcare services in recent years.

Sadly, the law is not perfect. There are still people who cannot get coverage, and some who cannot afford the premiums. That said, it’s a step in the right direction; the health insurance affordable care act has helped millions of people and is an important move towards providing universal coverage in the United States.

The ACA Family Glitch

As a result of the so-called “family glitch fix,” dependents of employees who have access to employer-sponsored health insurance are now qualified for premium subsidies under ACA plans if the family premium under the employer coverage reaches 9.5% of the family’s income in 2022. Previously, only the single employee premium was used to determine family member eligibility.

According to the White House, the rule change will result in around 1 million Americans either gaining health coverage or having their premiums reduced. Those who enroll in health insurance through the 2023 marketplace during the open enrollment period that starts on November 1 are subject to the new policy.

The U.S.A. Medical Insurance Statistics

The U.S. census notes that between the years 2018 and 2020, the coverage rate for public health insurance notably increased. In fact, during 2020, 87% of full-time, year-round workers were successfully covered. Thankfully, more and more Americans can now get the care they need without worrying about financial burdens.

That isn’t all. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 91.4% of U.S. residents had health insurance coverage during 2020. That’s fantastic news, but unfortunately, it does mean that about 28 million people in the U.S. went without coverage during the year. This is a slight increase from 2019, when 26.3 million did not have health insurance.

The main reasons for lack of coverage are cost and employer options. The individual market can be very expensive for those unable to get coverage through their job. Premiums have been inclining faster than wages for many years, and out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles and copayments can also be unaffordable.

Another barrier to coverage is the lack of available plans and affordable health insurance in some country areas. For example, nearly one in five people live in a county with only one insurer offering plans on the ACA marketplace. As you might imagine, this can make it very difficult to find an affordable health insurance plan that meets one’s needs and budget.
